Did you know that the relationship with one’s manager is the #1 key driver of employee engagement?

What can you do to have a great relationship with your direct reports, the other people you work with, as well as, friends and family, while you’re at it?  I’ll make it easy.   LISTEN, REALLY LISTEN.

LISTENING TIPS:

FOCUS – on the person and the conversation, with your eyes, ears, mind and heart.

  • Eyes – Look at them.  No looking at your phone, computer or TV.
  • Ears – Listen to them, what they are saying, not to that little voice in your head that is giving you a commentary, making judgments, or trying to think of something cleaver to say.
  • Mind – Listen for what’s possible in the form of ideas, solutions, and options, especially those that could be win/win. Also, listen for the “gold”, what’s good in this person and what they have to say.  It’s like mining for gold; you need to dig under the dirt to find the gold.  Look for gold vs. flaws.
  • Heart –Listen with an open heart, with empathy and compassion. Listen for needs vs. faults.

There is a saying, “God gave you two ears and one mouth.”  Use them accordingly.  Also, refrain from the need to be “right”.  This need makes it really hard to really listen!

If you are too busy to really listen, schedule a time when you can.  This is better than people wondering, “Is he/she even listening to me?”  You want them to leave the conversation really feeling heard which motivates them to be fully engaged and play “full out” – a win/win for both of you!

If you are struggling with really listening, contact me for a complimentary coaching session to discuss.
