Do you have your goals for 2017 yet? If not, go right now and read my blog, “Get Ready for 2017!” and download my helpful exercise on how to close out 2016 and get ready for 2017 – do it NOW!

For those of you who have your goals for 2017 written down, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed and wondering where to start. Take one goal at a time and list some action steps to help you achieve that goal. Create a timeline with some target dates. Good start!

Now, focus on doing first things first, or as some say, “Big Rocks First”. To really get this concept, gather some rocks of various sizes and fill a cup. You’ll find you can get more rocks in the cup if you start with the big rocks first and then fill in with the smaller ones. Close your eyes and ask yourself, “What are the Big Rocks for this goal?” This helps you prioritize and get into action. We are often tempted to start with the little rocks because we think they are easier or can be done more quickly. Doing the Big Rock first helps you accomplish your most important or toughest task early in the day and sets the tone for the rest of your day. It creates momentum and builds your confidence, moving you farther and faster toward your goal!

To gain even more momentum and focus, plan your day the night before! Focus first on your Big Rocks. Create your to-do list and visualize how you want your day to go. While you are sleeping, your subconscious mind is busy at work thinking of creative ways to help you achieve desired outcomes.

I have a beautiful rock I found on a hike that I keep on my desk. While it’s actually a relatively small rock, for me it is a reminder to do Big Rocks First.
