In response to my recent survey on, “What do you think is the biggest challenge for leaders?” I received lots of great feedback and insights.  One, in particular, from Coach Marianne Wagner of Conscious Creation Coaching, stood out because it was so thought provoking and is foundational for successful leadership.  I’m calling it Authentic Leadership.

A challenge for many leaders is being authentic.  Marianne describes it that leaders are often faced with the inability (or unwillingness) to take a good look at their own vulnerabilities and challenges and do the deeper work of clearing or reframing their shortcomings.  A big part of being a leader is to focus on external results – numbers, financial outcome and power.  That is part of their responsibility.   Leaders want to deliver what’s expected, what they’ve committed to, ideally, without any of their challenges, vulnerabilities or shortcomings being exposed.

Authentic Leadership also includes the deeper values of truth, integrity, vulnerability and personal responsibility.  These are key to establishing trust which is the foundation of leading teams.

Marianne shares, “As we transmute the energy that was subconsciously being used to “hide” our deeper challenges (we all have them!!) I notice that universal qualities, such as authenticity, compassion, trust, forgiveness, etc. begin to emerge. I think there is great opportunity to create a more authentic, empowering leadership model within each one of us – but it is work that must be done from the inside out.  Those who are fearlessly committed to continuously work with – and through – their personal areas of challenge, are already participating in the next level of leadership.”

As I work with leaders, I encourage them to be an observer of themselves.  This can lead to a level of self-awareness where you are consciously aware of your feelings, motives and desires.  Then you choose how to incorporate these as you lead.  I see this as the first step toward Authentic Leadership.

What do you think?  Is Authentic Leadership a challenge for leaders? How do you see Authentic Leadership fitting in today’s workplace?  Post a comment.
