What do you think? What makes an inspiring workplace? I’d love to hear what you think.
What do some of the experts say?
It’s that time of the year when my local newspaper, the Orange County Register, asks people to nominate their company for the “Top Workplaces” awards. Jonathan Lansner, the reporter who coordinates this survey, launched the search with an interesting article. His answer to what makes an inspiring workplace is to avoid making some common mistakes that employers make. This is based on numerous surveys of workplace characteristics that ANNOY employees. So, employers, if you want to have an inspiring workplace, maybe even make the “Top Workplace” list, here are mistakes to AVOID.
10 WORKPLACE MISTAKES TO AVOID:
- Bad Boss – the #1 reason quit a job. A coach can help you avoid this pitfall.
- Negative Vibe – who wants to work where people are angry, upset and morale is low?
- Poor Values – forcing people to do work that conflicts with their morality is taxing
- No Passion – workers want to be energized by their job; have a plan and be encouraging
- Unfair Pay – inequitable pay scales can result in low expectation and poor performance
- Lack of Recognition – kind words shared with workers can be more valuable than money
- No Shot at Advancement – this is morally defeating; create a road map for success for each employee
- No Challenges – This can be unmotivating; be creative; there can be challenges at any level
- Poor Communication – poor communication frustrates everyone and limits company effectiveness
- Slow Pace – in today’s world, if you go too slowly, you lose. Embrace and actively manage change.
We all know, no workplace is perfect. For many it’s easier to say what annoys them. Take a look at the things listed and think about possible solutions at your workplace. Pick one thing to work on this week.
